Some years ago, I was teaching a course on Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers. After a while, I began to suspect they had no idea what mathematics really was. So, I gave them an assignment to write a paper on "What is Mathematics?". On reading through their submissions, my suspicion was confirmed. So I sat down and wrote my own version of What is Mathematics? for them. I hope you like it.
